Information on Therapy
The approach to the treatment of trauma used by the Centre from 2002-2011 was based on cognitive therapy, suitably refined to deal with the particular needs of people who suffer psychological trauma. Trauma Focussed Cognitive Therapy or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the treatment of choice as recommended by the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the DHSSPS (Northern Ireland) Guidelines and Audit Implementation Network (GAIN) for the treatment of PTSD.
Evidence from research and experience suggests that cognitive therapy along with a broadly similar range of other therapies, are effective in the treatment of trauma. These therapeutic approaches would be regarded as the treatments of choice for trauma (including PTSD).
